      <image:title>2022 Distinguished Awards—Dale Hull - Distinguished Alumni Award</image:title>
<image:caption>After graduating from the University of Utah School of Medicine and completing his obstetrics and gynecology residency at University of Utah Medical Center, Dale Hull, MD ’85, MPA, was recruited to join a Salt Lake Valley OB/GYN private practice started by two of his former colleagues. He was on his way into a very promising career, but in 1999, just a decade into private practice, a backyard trampoline accident changed everything for the husband and father of four—and removed any illusion he had that he controlled the direction of his own life. “Typically as we go through life, we’re the ones who decide where to go to school, who to marry, what car to drive, or job to take. We contemplate and fuss about those decisions, but occasionally one of those things happens where you don’t choose the outcome. In my particular case, it was the day my spinal cord injury occurred.” Hull spent four months in the hospital and another two plus years in rehabilitation at home—experiences that were largely disappointing, in part because of the limits on what insurance benefits will cover. “I was very frustrated that the therapists only have time to get you ready to live with your disability—they change your door handles and teach you how to maneuver your wheelchair—but not a lot of time to change you as a person,” said Hull. For him, that change began seven months after his injury, when physical therapist Jan Black filled in for another therapist for a week. “She’d been told I was a cantankerous doctor dictating his own care, which I was because I was so frustrated by the system. She said, ‘You only have to put up with me for four days, just let me do my thing.’ I knew within the first 30 minutes I had an extraordinary PT.” With the ability to pay her privately, Hull hired Black to work with him almost daily and together they began brainstorming ideas for how to deliver care despite the many barriers. In 2004, they opened the doors to their nonprofit Neuroworx. What started with $500 in the bank and a 1,000-square-foot empty room is now a 24,500-square-foot, custom-built rehabilitation facility with a staff of 26 that draws people from across the nation to Sandy, Utah, for state-of-the-art care. As a nonprofit, Neuroworx seeks to eliminate financial barriers and other challenges that keep people from getting the care they need. “We have a terrible business model, giving away care every day, but a great people model,” joked Hull, who serves as executive director. Neuroworx offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy for adults and children affected by paralysis from spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, stroke, cerebral palsy, and similar neurological conditions. They also offer a wellness program, adaptive arts and crafts, a junior wheelchair basketball team, and more, including a recently added clinical psychology program. Success means different things for different people. “Even though I walk as a quadriplegic, we can’t make everybody walk because every injury and recovery is so different. However, if we help their spirits walk, we’ve provided an enormous benefit.”</image:caption>

<image:title>2022 Distinguished Awards—Jared Huber - M. Paul Southwick Prize for Clinical Excellence and Teaching</image:title>
<image:caption>At the start of each rotation at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Hospitalist Jared Huber, MD, tells his new trainees what they can expect. “I start every rotation by telling them they’re going to learn more during this two-week rotation with me than any other part of their residency,” he says. “And that’s not because of what I do, but because the patients we take care of will demand that they grow.” Huber and a group of trainees—including one second- or third-year internal medicine residency, two interns in their first year of residency, and one medical student—spend their days caring for and learning from 12 to 16 hospitalized cancer patients, many of whom have just received their cancer diagnosis and/or are nearing end of life. The patients are learning too, especially those who have just received a diagnosis. “There’s a lot of learning about what has to happen as you become a cancer patient,” noted Huber. Trainees gain valuable experience having difficult conversations with patients and their family members, often for the first time. It’s incredibly challenging work, but Huber wouldn’t have it any other way, describing how he “fell into this job that I absolutely love” in an academic medical system he’s long admired. “These are my families and friends, the communities that shaped me.” Now it’s Huber who is doing the shaping. “Huber is regularly brought up by the internal medicine trainees as one of the most respected and beloved attendings we work with,” wrote third-year resident David Haak, MD, in support of Huber’s nomination. Trainees appreciate that Huber looks out for their emotional well-being. “He is aware of how his team is faring emotionally and comes up with prompt plans to help,” wrote second-year resident Benjamin Gow-Lee, MD. “On one occasion, he quickly realized an intern was taking care of a patient who had the same cancer as her mother and was feeling distraught. He promptly gave her time to recover and found a way to help the team manage the patient well.” Receiving the M. Paul Southwick Prize for Clinical Excellence and Teaching was validating, said Huber, given the challenges his patients face. He hopes the confidence trainees develop during his rotation will stay with them long after they’ve moved on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>2022 Distinguished Awards—Matthew Fuller - Distinguished Humanitarian Award</image:title>
<image:caption>As a medical student at the University of Iowa, Matthew Fuller, MD, developed a passion for global health, thanks to his emergency physician mentors who got him involved in service. When it came time to complete his residency and fellowship, Fuller was drawn to the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine because of the reputation of the Department of Emergency Medicine’s global health programming. “There’s such a strong tradition of service at the University of Utah, and I also had some spectacular mentors here who gave me opportunities I wouldn’t have found elsewhere,” said Fuller. When the directorship of the global health fellowship program opened as his fellowship was concluding in 2014, Fuller was “in the right place at the right time.” As director of Global Health Fellowship, Fuller “helps align the resource-rich environment I practice in with resource-challenged environments. I try to leverage the resources we have in the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine, and the University of Utah, and connect those resources with people who have significant desire and capabilities around the world, whether in our backyard or halfway across the world in Vietnam,” he said. The term “global health” is a huge umbrella—often used as a catch-all term for anything outside mainstream health care, Fuller explained. “In reality, we have programs that work with the undomiciled population in Salt Lake City, as well as projects in Syria, Vietnam, and Peru.” “The programs he has set up have really become a model for some other teaching and global health practices throughout the U.S. and world,” wrote Department of Emergency Medicine Professor Scott McIntosh, MD, in his letter of support for Fuller’s nomination. His humanitarian efforts extend to his work as a researcher as well. When a close friend experienced pregnancy loss during peak poor air quality in the Salt Lake area, Fuller developed a research project on air quality’s impact on early pregnancy loss “which led to the study’s publication in Fertility and Sterility,” wrote Department of Emergency Medicine Associate Professor Troy Madsen, MD, in his letter of support for Fuller. “The paper received attention across worldwide media and has served as a catalyst for continued attention to air quality concerns in Utah.” Fuller’s role as fellowship director is in addition to his associate professorship in the Department of Emergency Medicine. And while he is humble about his contributions to the program, he acknowledges the sacrifices to his family as he spends weeks each year traveling abroad. “I have a wonderful, supportive partner, and two young boys, so it weighs on me that my choice to go abroad is often a choice not to be present for them—and they don’t have a choice in that, as important as the work is.” Still, it’s a fulfilling job that is worth the sacrifices. “It’s incredibly important for me, especially as a physician at an academic medical center, to remain humble,” said Fuller, who has helped lead global health projects in places like the Navajo Nation in Shiprock and New Mexico, among other locations. “Traveling to an area where colleagues have fewer resources than you, and are working harder than you, under so much more stress than you have, is very grounding. It reminds me how lucky I am to practice where I practice.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>2022 Distinguished Awards—Wayne Samuelson - Distinguished Service Award</image:title>
<image:caption>As a fourth-year medical student at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Wayne Samuelson, MD ’80, learned an important lesson from his advisor, Thomas Caine, MD, who taught him “how to be a doctor” a couple afternoons each week in the clinic. One Friday afternoon, with both men tired, the last patient didn’t show. “I thought, ‘Oh great, we’ll get done early,’” recalled Samuelson. “Dr. Caine said, ‘No, there’s a reason she missed.’” Caine made a house call and discovered the patient to be very ill with congestive heart failure. “That profoundly influenced me, and I made house calls all through my career. He taught me that it was a sacred calling to be a physician.” Heeding that sacred call is what Samuelson has done throughout his career—both as a clinician, serving patients with cystic fibrosis and asthma, and as an administrator for the past 20 years. Following graduation from the School of Medicine in 1980, Samuelson went to Duke University to complete his residency, fellowship, and internship, then took a faculty position with Duke to create a new clinic for adults with cystic fibrosis at the urging of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Later, Samuelson accepted his “dream job” with the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he went to work creating an adult asthma clinic. A few years later, with his clinical practice going well, he received a career-changing phone call from David Bjorkman, MD, then-dean of the School of Medicine and a longtime friend. The dean of admissions position had opened during a pivotal moment in the midst of a state legislative audit: Would Samuelson take over? At first, his answer was no; Samuelson didn’t think administration was his calling. However, John Hoidal, MD, then-interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, convinced him to give it a try; and that, as Samuelson describes it, is how he “stumbled into” administration. Following the successful legislative audit—the first of two he would oversee—Samuelson was invited to join the Association of American Medical Colleges Committee on Admissions. As a committee member, he helped champion the holistic review process for medical admissions with a focus on the “whole person,” not just GPA and test scores. He also made a national impact as part of the MR5 Committee, which reviews the MCAT. In this case, the committee helped revise the test to make it less biased and added biochemistry content to reflect the importance of the emerging field. At the School of Medicine, during his tenure as dean of admissions, the applicant pool increased from fewer than 900 applicants to approximately 4,000, with diversity increasing with each incoming class. In 2011, Samuelson became vice dean for education and began to advance innovative curriculum reforms. Part of an exceptional education means giving students real-world experience, including through the free medical clinic Samuelson helped establish in Midvale, where clinical and nursing faculty oversee care provided by students. For quite some time, Samuelson was the only attending physician. “It was a labor of love,” he said. “I would come home physically tired but totally rejuvenated.” Samuelson continues that dedication today as dean of medical education for the school. “It weighs heavily on me that 500 people who are brilliant and smart in every way have hitched their careers to what we’re doing in the medical school,” said Samuelson. “I want to make sure we give them the best education possible.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sharon Eubank—2023 Distinguished Awards - Distinguished Humanitarian Award</image:title>
<image:caption>Service to others is at the core of what drives Sharon Eubank in her life and work. For the past 25 years, Eubank has served in the Welfare Self-Reliance Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leading the Church’s humanitarian efforts worldwide. In this role, Eubank has overseen community-building initiatives in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Today, her purview has expanded to include the Church’s Perpetual Education Fund, a global loan program for students, as well as JustServe, an online platform connecting volunteers to service opportunities. Eubank is passionate about finding ways to help people improve their communities by applying their talents and energy to the places they live. “When you think about humanitarian work, people often think that they’re going to go somewhere else, and they’re going to do something in an exotic location,” Eubank said. “But in my experience, the most powerful thing we can do is engage in our local communities. We speak the language, we know the culture, and we can be so powerful in the place where we live.” As the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Humanitarian Award, Eubank reflects on her unique position to carry forth the Church’s mission of improving lives across the globe—and how that spirit of humanitarianism has been a guiding star since the pioneers’ arrival to the Salt Lake Valley in the mid-1800s. “... in my experience, the most powerful thing we can do is engage in our local communities. We speak the language, we know the culture, and we can be so powerful in the place where we live.” She recalls a moment of history when residents of the valley were concerned about the infant mortality rate and went door-to-door collecting funds to send six pioneer women to medical school. When they returned five years later, these women trained a contingent of nurses and midwives whose newly developed skills saved the lives of mothers and babies for years to come. Now, more than 150 years later, Eubank is highlighting one of the Church’s flagship humanitarian projects in the Middle East: the Nursing and Midwifery Development Center in the Kurdish region of Iraq. “The Church’s earlier pioneer experience reducing infant and maternal mortality came to bear when the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian team was sitting in a tiny little office in northern Iraq with a passionate nurse who wanted to train nurses on how to save mothers and babies,” Eubank said. “It allowed us to connect the experience we had here in Salt Lake City and ask her, ‘How can we help your communities who are losing babies in preventable ways?’” “To tie those 150 years together was really meaningful to me,” she added. For Eubank, the success she has achieved throughout her career can be largely attributed to the educators and mentors who taught her about the compassion, staying power, and empathy that is foundational to humanitarian work. “And to the many doctors, nurses, and midwives who have come from the University of Utah and volunteered their vacation days and expertise to teach medical colleagues around the world,” she said, “I’m truly grateful for the role that the University of Utah has played and for the many medical professionals who have helped. I couldn’t be happier to represent their work in this award.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>David Bjorkman—2023 Distinguished Awards - Distinguished Alumni Award</image:title>
<image:caption>David Bjorkman, MD ’80, MSPH, SM, was a pillar within the University of Utah School of Medicine (now Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine) for more than 30 years—highly regarded for his contributions as a scholar, educator, clinician, and administrator. In 2020, Bjorkman retired from his post as interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, having worked diligently to expand the department’s clinical, research, and academic missions, as well as championing many faculty- and staff-led initiatives. In 1980, Bjorkman was part of a cohort of 100 students to graduate from the School of Medicine. He recalls being a “pretty typical med student” in a close-knit class of talented, ambitious peers—two of which included Wayne Samuelson, MD ’80, a pulmonologist and former dean of medical education at the School of Medicine, and Elder Dale Renlund, a former cardiologist and current apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon graduation, Bjorkman moved to Boston to complete his internship, residency, and fellowship in gastroenterology at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was pleased when, in 1985, the University of Utah gave him the most competitive offer to return and join the faculty of the School of Medicine. “I loved my colleagues and the people who ran the programs there [at Harvard], but I was happy to come back to Utah,” he said. “I was back to the collaborative environment that I loved.” In the early years of his tenure at the U, Bjorkman worked hard to establish his expertise in endoscopy. He was appointed the university’s director of endoscopy, and he served as a leader in several national and international societies of gastroenterology. Even as he began to take on more administrative roles at the university, he scheduled one day a week in clinic to perform endoscopies. “Seeing this place grow in the 50 years since I graduated medical school, well, it’s like watching your kids grow up. It’s truly been a labor of love.” “It was important to me to maintain my identity as a practicing clinician,” he said. “But it was also important because when faculty would get a note on an endoscopic procedure, they’d see my name on it and say, ‘Hey, he knows what it’s like.’” Bjorkman’s reputation as someone who understood the business side of medicine grew during this time. After earning two master’s degrees—one in public health/health services administration from the University of Utah and another in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health—he was appointed the senior associate dean of the School of Medicine by Senior Vice President of Health Sciences Lorris Betz. In this role, Bjorkman helped to form and served as executive director of the University of Utah Medical Group, which today consists of more than 1,600 providers whose mission is to transform health care by implementing value-driven strategies, innovating new standards of practice, and integrating patient-centered care. When Betz retired in 2011, Bjorkman left the university to lead the development of the new medical school at Florida Atlantic University, where he served as dean for the next five years. Betz returned to the U in an interim capacity in 2017 and asked Bjorkman to assume a new leadership position as interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. This placement proved to be a wise choice on Betz’s part, as Bjorkman’s deep administrative knowledge helped the School of Medicine and University of Utah Hospital weather a severe revenue shortfall at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bjorkman has much to be proud of in a career that spans more than 35 years but, to him, the highlight has been the lifelong relationships he has built with those who have grown the university into the world-class institution it is today. “I have given my heart and soul to this place, and I am very grateful for this honor,” he said. “But I also feel like I don’t deserve it because so many other amazing people did the hard work. Seeing this place grow in the 50 years since I graduated medical school, well, it’s like watching one of your kids grow up. It’s truly been a labor of love.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Valerie Vaughn—2023 Distinguished Awards - Golden Anniversary Prize for Distinguished Clinical Investigation</image:title>
<image:caption>Valerie Vaughn, MD, MSc, knew she wanted to be a physician and scientist from an early age. She describes her background as a “modest” one: her father served in the Army, and her mother taught first grade. “Neither of them really knew much about how to navigate the treacherous pathway of getting into medical school and becoming a scientist,” Vaughn said. But they did instill in her a love of knowledge and numbers—and, most importantly, the confidence that she could change the world if she worked hard. “I was really interested in learning and discovering new things but also in helping to relieve suffering,” Vaughn said. “Early in my medical career, I realized that we don’t always get it right in medicine—that doctors are humans, too. Like all humans, we make mistakes.” In her role as a practicing hospitalist and director of hospital medicine research at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, Vaughn works to help doctors improve patient care and safety by reducing diagnostic error and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Over the past six years, Vaughn and her team have tackled antibiotic overuse by demonstrating the efficacy of “upstream” diagnostic testing. “If we can improve the way we use diagnostic tests, then we can improve the way we do medical care,” she said. “I think that’s a little bit of insight that can do more than just help us with antibiotics but help us understand how to improve patient care generally.” Vaughn’s scope is not just centered on outcomes at University of Utah Hospital. She also serves as the hospitalist lead for the Antimicrobial Use Initiative within the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety (HMS) Consortium and collaborates with hospitalists across the nation to ensure that patients get equitable, safe care wherever they need it. “Some hospitals need different resources and strategies than others, and I’ve really worked to try to make sure that happens,” Vaughn said. “Over the past few years, we’ve been able to make a difference. We’ve reduced antibiotic overuse, we’ve reduced the side effects and harms from inappropriate prescribing, and we’ve helped make diagnosis and patient care safer.” With funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Vaughn and her colleagues at the HMS Consortium recently developed two quality improvement measures that earned endorsements from the National Quality Forum, a nonprofit organization focused on driving measurable health improvements for patients nationwide. These measures are currently in use in 69 Michigan hospitals and 12 Mountain West critical access hospitals. “We’ve reduced antibiotic overuse, we’ve reduces the side effects and harms from inappropriate prescribing, and we’ve helped make diagnosis and patient care safer.” “What I’m most excited about is that, more recently, some of this work has been getting national attention,” Vaughn said. “We’ve been able to work with policymakers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to try to take what we’ve learned locally and improve care nationally.” As the recipient of this year’s Golden Anniversary Prize for Distinguished Clinical Investigation, Vaughn hopes this recognition will bring awareness to other initiatives she and her colleagues are undertaking at the university. One is the launch of the Utah Quality Advancement Laboratory (UQuAL) Hospital Medicine team: an embedded nurse liaison will implement quality-improvement projects and gather frontline data to improve care locally and be disseminated more broadly. “I’m really excited about this initiative. It’s something that we couldn’t do anywhere else and without the support of people here in the Department of Internal Medicine,” she said. “I’m hoping this award will help others learn about it and get involved if they’re interested.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Megan Fix—2023 Distinguished Awards - Distinguished Service Award</image:title>
<image:caption>For Megan Fix, MD, a sense of connection is the most important aspect of both medicine and life. In her roles as assistant dean of student affairs for the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine and vice chair of education for the Department of Emergency Medicine, Fix has used the idea of connection in coaching medical students, residents, advanced-practice clinicians, and faculty about ways they can deepen their relationship with patients, each other, and their higher purpose as physicians. Fix discovered her love for the fields of teaching and emergency medicine during her time as an undergraduate and medical student at Stanford University. She completed her residency at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program and has worked as an emergency physician clinician educator ever since. “I feel amazingly honored to be able to provide care for anybody, any time, and in any circumstance—my patients give me the honor to be a physician,” Fix said. “I also feel that I’m an educator, and that speaks to the community and medical school aspect of this. Being an educator is very important to me.” Since joining the University of Utah in 2010, Fix has built a strong reputation as a mentor and coach through her involvement in several Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine educational initiatives, including RealMD, Early Career Coaching, and the Academy of Health Sciences Educators. She recalls a time, years ago, when she collaborated with a medical student on a talk she gave for RealMD—one that highlighted Fix’s own struggles with mental health. She and her student connected on a deep level, sharing with each other some of their most vulnerable moments. “I said to her, ‘The hard work is the good work because I really feel that in challenge there is strength, and we all can grow together,” Fix recalled. The student ultimately pursued her residency in emergency medicine at the University of Utah—and Fix recently attended her wedding. “She said those same words during the wedding in her vows: ‘The hard work is the good work,’” Fix said. “I feel we had connected so much.” Fix feels “overwhelmed with the support” she has received during her tenure at the university and credits her mentors within the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine for encouraging her to approach her work with creativity and innovation—and to go beyond just teaching facts to embracing her role as an educator. “I feel amazingly honored to be able to provide care for anybody, any time, and in any circumstance—my patients give me the honor to be a physician.” “An educator inspires and helps establish the idea that we can always grow, that we can learn together, and that we can talk not just about the material but the person. I’ve really tried to represent that here at the University of Utah,” she said. “I’ve been supported here to develop myself as a physician educator, and I’m incredibly thankful.” Above all, Fix is grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the patients and students for whom she cares so deeply. “I’ve benefited from many great educators in my life,” she said. “Being able to give back and provide any type of positive impact on the lives of those that I’m around—that gives me tremendous joy.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Thirty Years in the Making - Dawn Wenzel, PhD</image:title>
<image:caption>For Dawn Wenzel, PhD, now leading her own lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the most profound lesson from her nine years of postdoctoral training with Sundquist wasn’t about how to collect facts: it was about how to think. “Wes would always emphasize that our research should strive to establish principles for how biology works instead of collecting facts,” recalls Wenzel, whose research focuses on the “abscission checkpoint,” a quality-control mechanism that arrests cell division to prevent catastrophic errors that can lead to cancer. “I think about this a lot as I develop our lab’s research program and mentor trainees.” This principle-driven approach was the cornerstone of her experience in the Sundquist lab. Wenzel describes Sundquist as an incredibly dedicated scientist who pushes his team to think deeply and perform the best experiment to answer a question. His common refrain at the end of meetings, “Let’s get it right,” instilled a commitment to rigor that she carries with her today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Thirty Years in the Making - Chaz Langelier, MD ‘11, PhD ‘11</image:title>
<image:caption>When Chaz Langelier, MD ’11, PhD ’11, established his lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, he carried forward what he calls Sundquist’s most important lesson: do it right, even when it’s hard. “Wes has exacting standards,” Langelier says. “Repeating experiments was common practice in his lab to ensure that data were as close to the truth as you could get. This instilled in me a foundational commitment to scientific integrity and rigor.” Langelier’s research now comprises three central areas: developing novel molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases, studying the host/pathogen biology of pneumonia and sepsis, and advancing methods for the surveillance of emerging infections. But the foundation was laid years earlier in the Sundquist lab, where as an MD and PhD student, he contributed to basic science research on HIV replication and capsid stability. “I was so happy for him; it’s incredibly well-deserved,” Langelier says of Sundquist’s TIME 100 recognition. “With so many negative and unfair things often happening in the world, it was wonderful to see something good happen. I can’t think of that award going to someone more deserving, who better represents what a scientist and professor should be.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Thirty Years in the Making - Ben Schmitz, PhD Student</image:title>
<image:caption>Biochemistry PhD candidate Ben Schmitz says that Sundquist’s dedication to science and work ethic is “truly contagious.” “It is both humbling and inspiring,” says Schmitz, who began conducting research in the Sundquist lab as a graduate student in 2018. “I believe his high standards will continue to shape and propel us throughout our careers.” He explains that the lab environment motivates scientists to push themselves further and raise their own expectations for what can be achieved. In the Sundquist lab there is a shared purpose, which is central to the lab’s culture. Schmitz’s own research centers on the adeno-associated virus (AAV), where he’s exploring how the virus escapes the cell—a question that challenges the assumption about how non-enveloped viruses are released. His research suggests that AAV may actively hijack the cell’s machinery to escape in novel ways. That drive to question assumptions mirrors the curiosity and perseverance he sees in Sundquist. “Wes is in his office nearly every single weekend, and he gets there hours before I do,” Schmitz says. “He’s one of the most driven people I’ve ever met, and for many of us in the lab, that drive inspires us to continue pushing and bettering ourselves as scientists.”</image:caption>
